So now we're docked in Katakolon. Chania, Crete is to the far south, and our starting point of Piraeus is 111 miles to the east. Our next stop is Corfu, then Brindis, then Kotor. And so far we've travelled 352 miles.
View from our balcony - another cruise ship was in town, too. |
3,000 people on this ship, compared to the 694 on ours. |
Little park right at the end of the dock. |
So we wandered through the little bit of market they had right at the dock, then went wandering around. We found a bakery and the tavern right beside it had these tables out front. Nice enough day, so we decided to buy some baklava and sit for a drink before going back to the ship. The little chalkboard was in English, so I pointed to 'Wine' and Dan pointed to 'Beer' and we had a seat. Out comes one of the owners with an Amstel for Dan, and a cute little jug of wine and small glass for me. The wine was white, and he said that his father makes the wine! It was delicious!
Better picture of the jug of wine. Those are locals in the background - probably couldn't wait to get rid of the tourists! haha! |
So after a couple of minutes and a couple of sips of wine, the owner comes out with small plates of food! Apparently when you order drinks, it automatically comes with food! Tomatoes, feta cheese, olives, a small bit of roasted pork in sauce, artisanal rustic bread ... it was all delicious! On the corner of the table was a copy of the Greek/English dictionary and phrases I took with us.
After a while of sitting at the taverna and watching the locals go by, Sandy and Steve from the cruise ship wandered by and we invited them to join us. The guy in the vest and white shirt is a local store owner - Peter or Tikas, depending on what you preferred to call him - who also joined us. He used to play for the National Greek Football (soccer) team, and carried the torch in Greece for the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Then in 2010, his son carried the torch for the Vancouver Olympics. Very cool!
Peter/Tikas ordered a jug of rose wine, made again by the owner's father. It, too, was delicious. Then they brought out even more food!
And Peter/Tikas took a group shot of us.
We really had a good time at that taverna!
On the way back to the ship, there is a store with murals on it. Here's a few pictures of us at the murals.
This is the street with the market at the end of the dock. Like I mentioned, not much for a market when tourist season is over.
